Walk into Chocolicious in the weeks leading up to Valentine's Day and you'll see red -- with a little pink thrown in. The little Locust Valley shop is a riot of heart-shaped boxes and cellophane-wrapped packages tied up with bright ribbons. "It's always colorful in here," said owner Susan Ackerman. "Green for St. Patrick's Day, pastels for Easter, orange for Halloween, russet for Thanksgiving and then red, gold and green for Christmas."
Ackerman opened Chocolicious in Glen Cove in 1991. Five years later, the shop moved to Forest Avenue on the outskirts of Locust Valley, and in 2011 took up residence in the center of the village, sharing its Victorian quarters with the Locust Valley Florist & Browsery.
The new space is picturesque, but the workspace -- where Ackerman makes all the shop's chocolates -- is about the size of an office cubicle. Seated, she can reach all three tempering machines (melting dark, milk and white chocolates) and the stainless-steel sink. The refrigerator and cooling racks are one step away. "I've got everything I need," she said, "and it takes half the time to clean."
Chocolicious is known for its almond bark ($19.75) and for truffles ($29.75 a pound) subtly infused with such flavors as brandy, Irish Cream, cinnamon, Grand Marnier, raspberry, pecan praline, and pumpkin spice. On a lighthearted note: freshly made popcorn drizzled with chocolate and M&M's Minis ($22 a pound).
Special for Valentine's Day are giant, chocolate-dipped pretzels studded with pink and red M&M's, giant marshmallow pops festooned with pink sprinkles and chocolate-dipped Oreos decorated with a heart. A bag containing all three is $10.75.Hours: Monday-Friday: 9 a.m.-7 p.m.
