In the Garage: 1952 Mercury Monterey

The owner: William and Pamela Gardella (1998)

What makes it interesting: According to Consumer Guide, "the 1952-1954 Mercury Monterey was a standout among early '50s Mercurys for exceptional styling and sound engineering, coupled with solid construction and high-quality fit and finish." William Gardella said that only 5,261 Monterey convertibles were made in 1952, with less than 100 left. "They were prone to rusting," he added. "The fact that this car's origin is southern California (1952-1995) probably added to its preservation." When the couple first met in 1964, William owned a Mercury convertible.Where he found it: They saw it at the Friday car show at the Bellmore train station and "it was love at first sight," Gardella said. They bought it that night.

Condition: "The car was previously restored in the early 1990s by its California owner," he said. "The restoration included re-chroming, new paint, new seats, new convertible top and new tires. The paint job has retained its luster during the 11 years we have owned the car. We wash it several times a year, but we have never waxed it."

Value: It's insured for $20,000.

Tips for owners: "Old cars require 'TLC,'" he said. "It's like having your first grandchild."

Personal comments: "The car brings back many memories of a wonderful era . . . an era when cars had character," Gardella said.
