Design Within Reach has opened its first Long Island location in Manhasset. The 12,000-square-foot space occupies two floors next to the Apple Store at 1900 Northern Blvd., and is filled with modern furniture by iconic designers such as Charles and Ray Eames and Jens Risom, along with a 20-foot-long wall of fabric swatches.

The retailer, headquartered in Connecticut, has more than 30 locations across the country, including three in Manhattan.

For the store’s grand opening, the company hosted a July 20 event that benefitted the North Shore Animal league. It partnered with Elias Weiss Friedman, the photographer behind the popular photo-documentary series “The Dogist,” to create a series of photographs featuring dogs from the organization’s shelters sitting on iconic modern furniture.

Long Island recently saw the opening of another notable furniture retailer. Arhaus, a 30-year-old family-owned home furnishings chain that started in Cleveland and now has more than 60 stores around the country, opened its first Long Island location in Roslyn earlier this year.

The company restored and renovated the nearly 20,000-square-foot former Port Motors building at 15 Port Washington Blvd. In the process, the renovation uncovered and exposed 90-year-old brick that had been moved there from the exterior of an indoor tennis court on the Pratt estate.

The Arhaus building also has an attached orangery that showcases the company’s outdoor furniture line, which previously did not have a separate display area in other stores.
