The more things change, the more they stay the same. It's a sentiment that can be applied to the hamlet of Miller Place, residents say. "I still feel that Miller Place has a melding of new and old," says Isabel LaPadula, owner-broker of Bel Breeze Real Estate who lives in the community.
Despite growth, Miller Place retains much of its small town appeal, especially along North Country Road, where the historic district, a duck pond and a few businesses can be found. Listed in the National Register of Historic Places, the historic district has more than two dozen 18th and 19th century homes.
McNulty's Ice Cream Parlor still has lines in the summer, and there are little restaurants tucked away on back roads, LaPadula notes.
Much of the area's commercial growth is along Route 25A, where Marshalls opened in 2009, and a new Walgreens is being built, says Dennis Consalvo of Aliano Real Estate. And many new housing developments have sprouted south of 25A.
Buyers can find a variety of house sizes and styles in a range of prices.
The terrain varies, too, from mostly flat land south of 25A to a rolling and wooded landscape on the north side with cliffs overlooking Long Island Sound.
Some neighborhoods have access to a private beach. And there are private access points all along to the Sound, LaPadula says.
