The historic Peace and Plenty Inn in West Hills has come on the market for $999,000.

The 1680 house is part of the Whitman Heritage Corridor, which is a five-square-mile area near the original home of American poet Walt Whitman.

The house was maintained by the Chichester family as an inn until 1915, according to the Huntington Historical Society archives.

“Everywhere you look, there is history,” says listing agent Joan DaCorta Fumento of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage of the 3,500-square-foot home on 2.3 acres. “The property is magnificent, rolling in some places, it goes up a little bit, making it very private.”

When first built, Peace and Plenty was used as a local gathering place and town meeting hall. The structure even has the original taproom that was built around 1690.

Later, Whitman and President Theodore Roosevelt frequented the inn. Roosevelt was known to go there for lunch, traveling from his home at Sagamore Hill in Oyster Bay.

As the house has changed owner’s hands, its historical integrity has been preserved. “It has a 14-inch planked floor in the kitchen, and throughout the whole entire house it is either 10 or 14 inches,” Fumento says. One bedroom has new flooring after a fire in 1980 destroyed a part of the house.

“It is one of a kind,” Fumento says, “it is going to take a very, very special person to buy this home."
