There are dream houses, and there are houses that you dream about and then immediately buy. At least that’s what home renovator Paul Rogers did nine years ago in Sag Harbor.

Rogers tells Hamptons Cottages and Gardens that about three weeks after having a vivid dream which recalled childhood memories of summers on the South Fork, he had purchased a whaler’s cottage in Sag Harbor’s historic district. It was the first house he saw. Rogers lived in the home six years before embarking on a complete renovation project, with the help of architect Gregory Zack.

While his decision to buy may seem impulsive, Rogers tells the magazine why he waited so long to start the overhaul, “"I am always amazed by people who buy a house and immediately renovate. You need to live in the house, see how the light moves through it, understand the flow and then you can begin to improve upon it." The renovation took a year and a half to complete, but Rogers is pleased with the result, "I love coming home to my house,” he tells the magazine. It's so filled with history, but now it's my history, too."
