Manhasset decorator wins national design contest
Just in case you ever need an award-winning kitchen, here’s the name to remember: Designer Vasi Ypsilantis of the Manhasset-based firm the Breakfast Room. She has just walked off with a first-place award from the Sub-Zero and Wolf Kitchen Design Contest.
The kitchen was designed in 2009, for the Mansions and Millionaires Show house; the house was the La Selva mansion in Upper Brookville, says Ypsilantis. It was on the market at the time.
The house was built in the 1920s, and, she said, “I tried to be true to the house, which was unique in that it was a Mediterranean-style villa. Every room showcased a different architectural design – especially ceiling design. The kitchen was more institutional. The first thing I addressed was to create a ceiling design more consistent with the rest of the house.”
The contest, which is held every two years, draws more than 1,400 entries from around the world. This year, there were two first-place winners, one in Traditional and one in Contemporary. Ypsilantis won first place in the Traditional category.
