Merrick designer offers outdoor decorating tips

Merrick designer Marlaina Teich recently made a TV appearance, her first, on WPIX Channel 11's “Metro Residential.” Teich says she showed how to “bring your indoors outside” to make outdoor entertaining and decorating more inviting and comfortable.
Teich says that the key to successful outdoor entertaining is to “bring things outside that are comfortable," she says. "If you surround yourself with them, you’re going to utilize the space more… You can really use what you have.” She recommends using throw pillows and candles or picking up other inexpensive accessories.
She breaks a backyard down into three zones: a dining area, a fun pool area with chairs, toys and towels, and a lounge area. If you do not have room to create three zones, she advises making the most of your space with a table and chairs. “Plants and flowers make a huge difference,” Teich adds. “You’ll feel like you’re surrounded.”
She notes that in today’s economy “people are trying to stay home more and are entertaining at home.” She suggests using outdoor couches in materials that will hold up against the elements.
