Old Westbury’s A. Conger Goodyear mansion is back on the market, now for an asking price of $4.9 million.
The 5.5-acre property is listed with Peggy Moriarty and Margaret Hargraves of Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty.
The predominantly glass house was built in 1938 by modernist architect Edward Durell Stone, who also helped design Radio City Music Hall in Manhattan and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. Goodyear, the home’s original owner, was a founder and first president of the Museum of Modern Art. When he died, the estate was turned over to the Long Island Institute of Technology, and later sold to a developer.The home narrowly escaped demolition when it was rescued by the World Monument Fund and the Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities. It was later purchased and partially restored by a private owner. The home has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 2003.
In 2007, designer Eric Cohler bought the estate for $2.4 million. At the time, Cohler told Newsday, "I'm getting my true glass house by one of the foremost architects in the world, so I feel very privileged, but I'm merely a custodian for the future.Tags: Old Westbury , Rich Cribs , A.
