WHY IT'S FOR SALE. Maryann, 77, is retired from the New York State Archives in Hauppauge, and her husband, Anthony, 81, is retired from Grumman, where he was a
mechanical engineer. They say they want to downsize and that they plan to stay in St. James.

“It was a poor little neglected house when we found it 40 years ago. We renovated but kept the historical aspects intact. We have original windows and floors . . . My dining room and den are my favorites.
The dining room is big but cozy . . . The den was added 20 years ago. We made it a very open room with a window wall and a fireplace so we can enjoy all four seasons. We blended it so it looks like part of the original house. We have a screened-in porch that is my little haven . . . and two covered decks overlooking a garden and a little pond . . . We have central air and full gas service for heating, cooking and the fireplace . . .
Upstairs were three bedrooms. However, we took a wall down and made a bedroom suite for ourselves. It’s very easy to restore to two separate bedrooms. ”
