Why it’s for sale: Steve, 59, is a boat captain, and Anne, 55, is a registered nurse. Steve has a new job out of state.

The Cluetts have lived in their Steamboat Gothic home for 15 years. It has four bedrooms and two bathrooms and is nestled on a .12-acre lot. According to the Greater Port Jefferson Historical Society plaque, the circa-1840 home was built by John “Billy” Brown, a stagecoach driver. Anne talks about the house:

“I love the sense of history the home has. It has a lot of character . . . especially during a time when things are so similar and houses look alike. This is a unique home. The second level is really the main level. There’s a bedroom on that floor and then two bedrooms on the third level . . . My husband felled oak and cherry trees from Belle Terre and Head of the Harbor and had them sawn into planks and milled into wide-plank flooring and cherry trim for the main level. He hand-built the kitchen cabinets and put in soapstone counters . . .

We redid both bathrooms, one with a claw-foot tub. Prospect Street has been referred to as arguably one of the most beautiful streets on Long Island. There are many homes of the same character and history. The Historical Society is right across the street . . . and you can walk to the village. I don’t need a car on the weekends. I can go to the park, the beach, the theater, the bank, the drugstore and restaurants. And kids can walk to the middle and high schools . . . The [property] taxes are very low. I don’t know of many homes on Long Island with taxes that low . . ."
