Solar community under way in Middle Island
While it’s not unusual to hear about the construction of an environmentally friendly house, Art Wilson, owner of AJW Home Consultants in Ridge says he is trying to take green to the next level.
The builder is developing what he believes is Long Island’s first solar community, says Brenden Burns of Shawn Elliott Luxury Homes & Estates, who will market the five-lot Middle Island subdivision.
Each Energy Star-rated home will have solar panels and a geothermal system, says Wilson. Solar panels collect and convert the sun’s energy into electricity, which can save homeowners on their electric bills. And since the geothermal system operates the heating and cooling functions, oil and gas bills are eliminated.
The new development will be off Church Lane on a private road. Ranch-style homes ranging between 1,500 and 3,000 square feet will be built on parcels just shy of 1 acre. Features will include wood floors, a fireplace and full basement as well as three bedrooms, three bathrooms, an eat-in kitchen and formal dining room. Buyers will be able to customize.
Prices will start at $399,000.
The builder is clearing the land. The road and drainage will be put in next. Depending on the weather, the houses could be ready to move into by summer, Wilson says.
