Huntington Bay Tudor may have housed Elizabeth Taylor

Most people who live in the area know this Huntington Bay Tudor by sight, but may not know its history. It was built in 1930 by poet and artist Vera Hammann and named Far Horizons for its views of Huntington Bay and the Connecticut shore. Hammann later used the name for one of her books of poetry. It is also believed to have been a temporary home to Elizabeth Taylor during the 1958 filming of "Cat On a Hot Tin Roof" in nearby Oyster Bay Cove. The property is on the market in September 2013 for $3.295 million. (Credit: Handout)

Most people who live in the area know this Huntington Bay Tudor by sight, but may not know its history. Built in 1930 by poet and artist Vera Hammann, it was named Far Horizons for its views of Huntington Bay and the Connecticut coastline. Hammann later used the name for one of her books of poetry.

It is also believed to have been a temporary home to Elizabeth Taylor, when she may have rented the house during the filming of “Cat on a Hot Tin Roof” in nearby Oyster Bay Cove in 1958.

The property is on the market for $3.295 million.

Hammann was so excited about the house, with its intricately patterned brick and stone work, that she went to school to become an interior decorator so she could add her own touches, says listing agent Laura Zambratto of Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty. Hammann hand-painted the lead windows herself.

“This is truly an authentic English Tudor,” Zambratto says. “It’s an amazing piece of architecture.”

Much of the six-bedroom house has been updated, with a gourmet chef’s kitchen, radiant heated bathroom floors and central air-conditioning, but many original details remain, including a 7-foot-high fireplace mantel made of hand-carved limestone.

The lushly landscaped 2-acre property also features specimen plantings, a pool with a waterfall, a pond, gazebo and potting shed.
