This Shelter Island property has 175 feet of waterfront, a 118-foot deepwater dock and a modern barn-style home on more than an acre. It is on the market for $4.95 million.

The couple who built the home in 2000 is from Europe and were drawn to the waterfront location, says listing agent Penelope Moore of Saunders & Associates. Along with the dock, they built a boardwalk with a sitting area, which has views across Smith’s Cove to Mashomack Preserve.

“It really started with the waterfront,” Moore says. “From there, they wanted something that was going to fit into the landscape, that was rural looking, but sleek.”

The four-bedroom home was built using post-and-beam construction, with pegs instead of nails, and has a rustic feel. The open kitchen and living room, with a fireplace, have doors that open to a wraparound veranda, which overlooks a heated gunite pool. There is also a carriage house with a kitchenette, full bathroom and balcony that sits over a two-car garage.
