The dish on Long Island's restaurant and food scene

The new Lincoln Station Bar & Grill in Bellmore seems to be off to a fairly auspicious start. The handsome tavern, with old fashioned checkered cloths and leather banquettes, offers appealing prices — especially its $16.95 prix-fixe, available Sunday to Thursday nights.
With the exception of the thick-as-paste New England clam chowder ($6.95), the food made a generally positive impression....Read more »
Toast & Tapas Neighborhood Bistro is the new incarnation of the former 516 Americana in Syosset and is now affiliated with Toast & Co. in Huntington. While the Huntington restaurant doesn’t serve dinner, the Syosset locale does. Then, on Friday and Saturday nights, it also features a tapas menu — actually, small plates, not the traditional Spanish bar snacks — as well as live...Read more »

So it’s no small matter when folks decide to screw around with the apple. That’s what C&O Nursery of Washington state has...Read more »

Bob’s Restaurant in Floral Park is no more.
The attractive bi-level spot, which was called Bob's Place when it opened, received a single star in 2009. Newsday's Peter Gianotti had kind words for the “hospitable, unpretentious service” and such dishes as “fine sauteed soft shell crabs” and a “very tender braised pork shank.”

Add to the list of superstorm Sandy restaurant casualties Cattlemen’s Steakhouse & Saloon in Lindenhurst, which was situated on Montauk Highway alongside a canal.
The place, which opened in 2010 and spawned a short-lived Port Jefferson Station offshoot, was known for its Old West ambience and big, inexpensive steaks.
What will become of the locale remains to be seen.

Yesterday, Oceana released a report entitled “Widespread Seafood Fraud Found in New York City.” The international ocean-conservation group collected samples from grocery stores, restaurants and sushi venues and found that 39 percent of the 142 samples were mislabled.
Oceana has performed similar studies around the country with similar results: In Los Angeles, 55 percent of samples were mislabed,...Read more »
A colorful new facade drew me to La Hacienda del Rio, an El Salvadoran restaurant that, until now, had blended unobtrusively into the Huntington Station streetscape.
Inside was a cavernous dining room — some walls in need of a paint job. On one side was a bar area framed by a charming archway of artificial trees. On the other side of the room was the entrance to a bustling takeout shop.

Observant readers may have noticed that over the past few months, FeedMe, always up for a great pizza, has been visiting even more pizzerias than usual. This is in preparation for the Dec. 20 publication of our first list of Long Island’s best artisanal pies, ranked in order of preference.
Last week I finished up the research at The Pie in Port Jefferson, which has been making coal-oven pies...Read more »
