The Smithtown offshoot of Uncle Bacala’s in Garden City Park has closed. The place opened in 2011 but hadn’t really been making money, according to owner Peter Hewitson. “There are about 35 Italian restaurants within a mile or two,” he said, noting also that traffic problems and road construction had added to the restaurant’s woes.

One Italian restaurant replaces another as Groppelo's Ristorante takes over the former Port Washington digs of Sisina. Although the switch actually happened months ago, the correct sign only recently went up.
On the menu: A Margherita pizza ($12.95), polenta and asparagus ($12.95), rigatoni Bolognese ($16.95), chicken scarpariello ($19.95) and shrimp and pico de gallo ($22.95).

Sweet Tomato Brick Oven Pizza & Grill just made its debut in the St. James space that last housed Attilio’s Grill (but is perhaps best known for hosting the former Bella Vita City Grill). The new eatery offers brick-oven pizza and an Italian repertoire. Co-owner Allison Clusel said that, for now, former Attilio's owner Sam Mancini is the chef.

You now have two new places to eat as the food scene at Walt Whitman Shops mall in Huntington Station continues to expand.

Sal’s Ristorante replaces DiMaggio’s on Jericho Turnpike in Smithtown. The original DiMaggio’s in Port Washington is under separate ownership and is open.

Dell’Amore Pizzeria and Spaghetti House in Seaford is another post-Sandy rescue story. The little place, formerly Carmine’s Pizzeria, had been destroyed by the storm when it was bought by Scott Meisel. Meisel had cooking and management experience at such places as Aldo’s of Floral Park, 56th Fighter Group in Farmingdale and the Garden City Hotel.

AcQua, a family-style Italian restaurant, makes its home in the former clubhouse of the Blue Water Yacht Club in Merrick. The place originally opened in June 2012 but, after taking a big hit from superstorm Sandy, was under renovation until a couple of months ago. The ever-evolving Farmingdale restaurant scene now has its own La Bottega. The Italian sandwich/salad/pasta/ pizza franchise group, launched in Garden City South by Giuseppe and Marisa Ruta, now numbers 13, according to Giuseppe Ruta. There are also two in Queens, two in New Jersey, one in Brooklyn and, believe it or not, in Modica, Sicily.
