Community Profile

To those who don't live there, Commack is home to a healthy mix of small businesses (look in the strip malls) and big box stores (the community has not one but two Target stores, and a Wal-Mart.) But behind the shield foliage lie dozens of small, suburban enclaves.

"People have their own little serenity away from it all," says Jerry Tranes, a broker for Coldwell Banker Residential.

It's the closeness between businesses and cul- de-sacs that make Commack a great place to live, Tranes says. Also, school officials can brag about their impressive student body.

About 97 percent of students plan to attend either a two- or four- year college.
