Legacy: Poppenhusen Institute

The Poppenhusen Institute, 114-04 14th Rd. in College Point, has two original jail cells and a restored grand ballroom where town meetings were held. The five-story institute also houses the first free kindergarten in the United States and a fire department exhibit with an original hose wagon and a replica of a firehouse. The institute is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays-Wednesdays and 1 to 9 p.m. Fridays. Call 718-358-0067 for an appointment. Admission is free, but there is a $3 charge for the Native American Museum, which focuses on the Matinecocks of College Point.
