'Just One of Those Things'
0N MAY 4, 1949, Air Force 2nd Lt. Andrew Wallace took off from Mitchel Field on a routine training flight. But as his F-82 Twin Mustang interceptor rose from the runway, it failed to gain sufficient speed to clear a fence. Wallace pulled up the plane's nose, but the plane stalled and dove onto Fulton Avenue in Hempstead, crashing into a partially built house. A piece of propeller hit another house on Duncan Road.

A Rescue Scuttled By High Seas
0N FEB. 8, 1895, the Louis V. Place, a three-masted schooner carrying a load of coal from Baltimore to New York, was stranded off Fire Island in a howling nor'easter. For two days, rescuers from the nearby Lone Hill lifesaving station struggled with snow, ice and bitter winds in an attempt to reach the eight-man crew, which took refuge in the rigging of the ice-cloaked ship.

When the Sky Fell in Wantagh
ABOUT HALF past noon on Aug. 3, 1954, an Air Force Republic F-84 Thunderjet roared out of a cloudy sky and crashed in the center of Denver Road in Wantagh, a subdivision busy with families and young children. The pilot died in the crash, which sprayed jet fuel and chunks of metal over a wide area. Five people on the ground were injured and one man died of injuries several days later.
