An Introduction
PLANES, TRAINS, boats and cars: Through two centuries, Long Islanders have been at the forefront of advances in the way the world travels. This special section of Newsday's "Long Island: Our Story" series is a look at some of them.
When it comes to transportation, the Island is a place of many firsts: from the countless records set by the fearless early aviators who flew from the airfields of Nassau County, to the groundbreaking Long Island Motor Parkway, William K. Vanderbilt II's 45-mile prototype of the nascent American highway. From the exploits of the Island's whaling captains and the impact of its boat designers, to the bold (if not always smooth) way the men driving the Long Island Rail Road helped define the modern American commuter railway.
In this section you'll meet some of those adventurous and far-sighted people of Long Island who have helped move the world forward.
