Do you recognize these places?
Sixteen Newsday readers identified the history mystery at right (circa 1910) as the mansion of Peter W. Rouss in Bayville, which later became Oyster Bay Hospital and is now a United Cerebral Palsy center. Other readers - many with certainty - identified it differently.
``I'm sure that is in Glen Cove and was called Gracie Mansion,'' one reader wrote after Newsday printed the photo Oct. 4. ``And then it turned into a school for stewardesses. I should know, I dated quite a few of them.'' But Newsday used photos and other sources to confirm the Bayville identification and rule out others, which included:
The Jennings residence, Burrwood, in Cold Spring Harbor; The Chrysler mansion, Wiley Hall, in Kings Point; The Woolworth mansion, Winfield Hall, in Glen Cove; The Field mansion, Caumsett, in Lloyd Harbor; The Belmont house on Fullerton Avenue, Hempstead; The Keene residence, Rosemary Hall, Old Westbury.
The Hicksville garage, below, was recently identified by Gertrude Smith and her daughter, Lois, of Hicksville. The Smiths said the Hicksville firehouse on East Marie Street occupies the place where the garage stood. The garage was owned by Gertrude's brother, George Neder, early in the century.
