More than a dozen readers sent in solutions to these ``History Mysteries.'' They agreed that both are scenes of Patchogue from around 1900, when it was a thriving tourist spot.
The scene at top was brick-paved East Main Street before trolley rails were laid in 1907, said Hans Henke, a Patchogue village historian. He identified the buildings on the right as the Brookhaven Town office, Roe's Hotel, and in the background, the Fishel building, which had an ornate tower.
Below is the Clifton Hotel near Grove Avenue on the Great South Bay. It began business in 1883, and was enlarged several times. The building was finally torn down around 1940, Henke said.
