HISTORY MYSTERIES
A Placid Landscape
Country Scene (Photo From Nassau County Museum Collection, Long Island Studies Institute / )
Today's mystery photograph is a country scene not unlike what one might find even today on a drive upstate or to a few less-traveled parts of Long Island's East End.
The image is among uncaptioned photographs in the Nassau County Museum Collection of the Long Island Studies Institute at Hofstra University.

Warren H. Griffin of Sea Cliff said the photo shows a post office on Glenwood Road and a pond that since has been filled in. The wooden bridge on the left stood at the foot of School House Road, he said. To prove his point, Griffin sent copies of old postcards from his large collection, including a card made from the photo at right.
Another "History Mystery," published Feb. 14, has been identified by two readers as Glenwood Landing in the Town of North Hempstead, circa 1910.

More identification came to Newsday through e-mail from a keen-eyed observer who identified himself only as Wayne. He said the body of water was known as Townsend Pond before it was filled in and that today's Glenwood Post Office rests on the old pond's site.
Others spotted resemblances to different areas, including old hunting lodges at Connetquot State Park, Mill Pond in Smithtown's Blydenburgh Park, and a general store and post office at Sagaponack.
