THEN AND NOW
School's Out, Doctors Are In
BUILT IN 1907, the old schoolhouse on Montauk Highway was the pillar of education for youngsters in East Moriches. The building, which had two rooms on the first floor and two on the second, housed kindergarten through eighth grade classes until a new school was opened in 1955.
The East Moriches school district retained ownership of the building until 1987, when it was sold to be restored and used as office space. However, on Sept, 11, 1989, the building was destroyed in an arson fire. There is a new building on the site with a doctor's office. One thing remains, however: the statue of an eagle that was in front of the old schoolhouse.
