A Pier Into The Future?

Article tools

The Sea Cliff Boardwalk was a popular attraction for vacationers when this photo of Carpenter Point was taken in 1910.

The boardwalk was built in 1871 by a group affiliated with the Methodist church, which had bought 240 acres of waterfront property at what is now Sea Cliff as a site for camp meetings. The boardwalk extended both north and south from a steamboat pier at the foot of Cliff Way, says Helen Davis, director of the Sea Cliff Village Museum.

The boardwalk was damaged by a hurricane in 1938, and destroyed in 1944 by another hurricane.

However, a village citizens committee is seeking to raise $100,000 to rebuild a portion of the boardwalk. The organizers are almost halfway toward their goal, says village Clerk Nancy Rose, a member of the committee.
