THEN AND NOW
Surviving Is a Piece of Cake
Seven decades can bring enormous change, but at the bake shop located at 138 Tulip Ave. in Floral Park, things haven't changed all that much, except for the price of cakes.
The older set of photographs was taken around 1931, during a brief six-month period when Leo and Mary Leuchs owned the shop, according to their daughter, Ann Marie Sprotte of Garden City.
Leo Leuchs was born in Germany and trained as a baker there, Sprotte said. He went to work at the bake shop and eventually took over the store, then known as the Quality Bakery.
"My father was not a businessman," Sprotte said, and he soon gave up the store. He continued to work as a baker at other shops, however.
The bakery, meanwhile, went through several owners since then, said Halina Caric, whose husband has owned the shop since 1984.
And the shop itself has gone through some changes, she says. "The front looks a little different, the ceiling is different, and the door is someplace else."
