Golden Summers
Some Long Island athletes who have won gold medals in the Summer Olympics:
Al Oerter, West Islip, discus: Set Olympic records in Games of 1956 (Melbourne), 1960 (Tokyo), 1964 (Rome) and 1968 (Mexico City).
Bob Beamon, Queens and Adelphi University, long jump: Set world record of 29-21/2 at Mexico City in 1968.
Mel Pender, Adelphi University, 400-meter relay: His quartet set world record of 38.24 at Mexico City Games in 1968.
Derrick Adkins, Malverne, 400-meter hurdles: Won at Atlanta in 1996 in 47.54.
Shannon MacMillan, Smithtown, women's soccer: Scored a goal in U.S. team's 2-1 victory over China in the gold medal game at Atlanta in 1996.
Chris Mullin, St. John's University ('85), basketball: Member of gold medal Dream Team at 1992 Barcelona Games. Also a member of gold medal team in 1984 Games at Los Angeles.
Ray Barbuti, Lawrence, 400-meters: At Amsterdam in 1928, finished a foot ahead of James Ball of Canada in time of 47.8.
Howard Davis, Glen Cove, boxing: At the 1976 Montreal Games, the lightweight beat out Sugar Ray Leonard, among others, for most oustanding boxer award.
Leo Sexton, Hempstead, shot put: At the 1932 Games in Los Angeles, the 6-foot-4 insurance broker set an Olympic record with a toss of 52-6.
Larry Brown, Long Beach, basketball: Member of the gold medal team at 1964 Tokyo Games.
Ernie Grunfeld, Forest Hills, basketball: Member of the gold medal team at 1976 Montreal Games.
Mitch Kupchak, Brentwood, basketball: Member of the gold medal team at 1976 Montreal Games.
