HARTFORD - State officials are urging owners of illegal assault weapons and large capacity magazines to turn them over or permanently disable them.

Under the state's new gun law, people were required to register those items by Jan. 1.

Officials say anyone who did not should turn them over to police.

They say people who fail to do so will face charges.
