Cops: New Paltz man met girl, 13, via Facebook for sex
A New Paltz man is accused of having sex with a 13-year-old girl he met on Facebook, the Ulster County Sheriff's Office said.
Deputies arrested Ian P. Mehrhof, 21, on Friday and charged him with second-degree rape, a felony.
Mehrhof and his victim were corresponding on Facebook before Mehrhof allegedly set up a meeting, cops said. The New Paltz man "transported the 13-year-old to a secluded location" in Gardiner, according to cops, before having "sexual contact" with the girl.
The girl contacted police on Aug. 30 to report the alleged crime. Detectives said they're still investigating the claims and they anticipate filing additional charges.
Mehrhof was arraigned and sent to Ulster County Jail without the option to post bail. He's due back in Town of Gardiner court on Wednesday.
Mehrhof's Facebook profile had been pulled as of Saturday afternoon; a profile on another social media site was closed off by privacy settings.
A man who answered the phone at Mehrhof's New Paltz home declined to comment. A phone message was left Saturday with Thomas K. Petro, Mehrhof's attorney.
