A Middletown man was charged with manslaughter in the death of a New Jersey man after an early morning bar fight Saturday, Middletown police said.

Police received calls about a fight at the West Gate Bar on West Main Street, and when they arrived at 2:50 a.m., they found a 46-year-old New Jersey man slumped in front of the building.

The officers "found him to be nonresponsive," police said, and sent him by ambulance to Orange Regional Medical Center in Middletown, where he later died.

Middletown police said only that they believe the victim died after "being struck by another individual." They didn't answer questions about the circumstances of the attack or whether the injury was inflicted with a weapon.

Police did not publicly release the victim's name because they had not yet reached his family.

Cops arrested 23-year-old Kevin Conklin of Middletown and charged him with first-degree manslaughter. Police did not say where Conklin was arrested or how they developed information leading to his arrest.

Conklin was arraigned in Middletown City Court and was held in police lockup Saturday afternoon, pending transfer to Orange County Jail. Bail was set at $250,000 or $500,000 bond. Conklin did not have an attorney listed in records and attempts to reach his relatives were unsuccessful.
