OAK RIDGE - An overnight salvage yard inferno in Oak Ridge nearly destroyed Sar’s Auto Wreck after cars and tires ignited in a large blaze.

Police say the flames were sparked at around 7 p.m. Saturday with two separate fires.

Tankers from across northwestern New Jersey were forced to bring water to the scene because of the lack of fire hydrants in the area.

Crews were still on the scene in the late afternoon Sunday putting out hotspots after more than 1,000 cars were reduced to smoldering metal.

There were no reported injuries and no evacuations necessary.

A shelter was set up at Camp Jefferson for anyone who wanted to escape the intense smoke that surrounded houses.

Authorities do not know what caused the fire.
