At Met Museum gala, models turn out in full force

The "supermuses" were out in full force at last night's annual Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Benefit, one of the hottest invites to get if you're ANYONE in fashion, film, music or high society. The VIP party celebrates the Met's newest exhibit, "The Model As Muse: Embodying Fashion," a survey of supermodels through the decades, beginning Wednesday through Aug. 9.

Hot models from history showed up: Brooke Shields in a column of teal, Gisele Bundchen in a sequined Versace mini, Cindy Crawford in electric Versace with sky-high slit, and Helena Christensen in sassy pink Zac Posen with scads of silver crystals.

"I feel like Cleopatra," said Katy Perry, in a dramatic Tommy Hilfiger number.

Heidi Klum looked radiant in a J. Mendel strapless with layers of burned-edge organza (it took a month to make) and a "baby bump" bow in front - yes, she's expecting her fourth child. How'd she keep the voluminous train from dragging in the puddles out front?

"By me, hiding behind the limo, and holding it all up," said designer Gilles Mendel, smiling. "It's not the most glamorous moment," he joked.

Lauren Hutton sported a Michael Kors dress with red and black stripes - and a hem that just covers her leg brace, courtesy of a recent Waimea Bay surfing accident.

Justin Timberlake sprinted past the media in a tux from his own William Rast label, while Obama fave Jason Wu (who designed a vivid blue number for Jessica Alba) paused at the top of the stairs, taking it all in.

"This is my first time at the Met," said Wu, as sincere and wide-eyed as a kid on a school trip.

He took one last look, then spun round and headed inside - just missing the sight of - what the? - Madonna, in a wacky, bunny-eared hat.

Hey, Mr. Wu, you're not in Washington, D.C., anymore. This is New York.
