Take a look inside Gym 4 Kidz in Valley Stream and you'll notice pint-size treadmills, mini-stationary bikes and kid-friendly elliptical machines. You may think it's just a gym for little ones, but this Long Island newcomer also helps kids get fit and eat healthfully while encouraging them to embrace their self-esteem.

Gym 4 Kidz (62 Rockaway Ave.) isn't a typical gym. Here, a certified instructor or gym teacher introduces fitness to children ages 5-12 in a non-intimidating way — through group classes.

The age-appropriate, 60-minute classes are offered after school and consist of cardio exercises on kid-sized equipment, and strength training using hydraulic machines or floor workouts such as sit-ups and push-ups. All classes end at the Exergame (see image below), a digital agility "SportWall" that encourages kids to use their bodies to beat the timer.

Owners Armando and Saundra Hernandez of Lynbrook recently opened Gym 4 Kidz with hopes of helping little ones get into shape.

"With three sons of our own, we've had a front-row seat to see the decline in overall health of today's youth," said Armando. "We both share the desire to promote the importance of physical fitness as well as healthy eating."

Parents are welcome to stay and watch the class, but some slip away to run errands or enjoy a cup of coffee at Sip This, which is located next door.

Classes are $35 each, $119 for four classes, or $199 for eight classes. There is a $29 enrollment fee which is waived when purchasing the eight-class bundle.

Gym 4 Kidz also offers birthday parties on weekends. The 90-minute bash includes gym/exercise activities and birthday party packages include pizza and drinks, invitations and paper goods for up to 12 kids; birthday child is free. Rates: $299 (members) and $346 (nonmembers), each additional kid is $15.
