"Dancing With the Stars" co-host Brooke Burke-Charvet announced Thursday that she has thyroid cancer and will undergo a thyroidectomy.

The news -- especially the unorthodox way she announced it, via her Modernmom YouTube channel -- appeared to catch even ABC unaware. The network referred comments to her publicist, who said, "Her work schedule will not be affected."

In the YouTube post, Burke-Charvet, 41, said a routine exam some months ago had discovered a nodule, which tested positive for cancer over the summer. She said the thyroidectomy would create "a nice big scar" across her neck, and so "I don't get to just walk around and pretend like nothing happened . . . because it's going to be pretty much dead center. I don't want anybody to read about it and get the wrong idea, or think that I'm sick, because I'm not." She said her doctor called her prognosis excellent, or "a happily ever after ending kind of thing."

Burke-Charvet -- married to one-time "Baywatch" star David Charvet -- has built an active career outside of "DWTS," notably as an entrepreneur with interests on the web and fashion (belly wraps for pregnant women). But the onetime Playboy centerfold and former "DWTS" champ has relentlessly built an image as a supermom -- she has four children, two with Charvet, two from her previous marriage to celebrity doctor Garth Fisher -- in perfect health.

Said she: "I've booked my surgery [and] it's taken me a couple of months to really wrap my head around this. Now . . . I'm ready to deal with it, and I'm going to be fine."
