Fashion Week: Emmy Rossum skips the cake

Emmy Rossum was lounging backstage before the Narciso Rodriguez show late Tuesday with a half-eaten birthday cake before her. Let's clarify: The cake was all there, but the icing was gone. Is today your birthday, Emmy? "No," replied the "Phantom of the Opera" star. "But it was Saturday."
Further probing revealed that Rossum couldn't have eaten the cake, because she suffers from a gluten allergy. She recently wrapped a new film "Dare," with Sandra Bernhard in Philadelphia. It was near-torture, the actress said, because of all the cheesesteaks in her midst.
The upside of this problem? "The allergy prevents me from eating carbs," Rossum explained. "It's the only reason I'm able to fit into any clothes during Fashion Week."
A NOD TO CONRAD. So it wasn't quite Mean Joe Greene giving his jersey away after a game, but "Hills" star Lauren Conrad made a little girl named Samantha very happy Wednesday before the start of Nanette Lepore's show.
The girl, about 6, poked through the clog of paparazzi, handed Conrad a sheet of paper and asked for an autograph. Conrad complied, inking "Samantha" in bubble-type letters and holding it up to make sure she got the spelling right. She had, the kid nodded.
HELPING 'HOST. 'Cat Deely, of "So You Think You Can Dance," has an idea for the reality series they've missed: "So You Think You Can Host."
"I would be the mentor," she joked Tuesday night, before the G-Star Raw show at the Hammerstein Ballroom. "And the wannabe hosts would have to live with me."
Deely was front row with other denim-loving celebs, including Corbin Bleu, who plays a model on "The Beautiful Life."
We asked Bleu, a former model, if he had needed "catwalk refresher lessons" before joining "TBL." "I did my own research - you know, going online," he said. You really can learn anything on the Web.
