The parents of film star Heath Ledger, who died nearly five years ago from an accidental overdose of prescription medications, say they have remained close to the actor's ex-girlfriend, actress Michelle Williams, and the couple's 7-year-old daughter, Matilda.
In an interview with the Australian magazine New Idea, the divorced KimLedger and Sally Bell, who live in Perth, also said they think of their son daily. "It has been an extremely difficult five years," Bell said, "as not a day goes by when we don't feel the immense loss of Heath."
Despite their distance from Brooklyn, where Williams lives with beau Jason Segel, "Our family has the most wonderful relationship with both Matilda and Michelle. We talk frequently and visit as often as we can," Ledger said.
"Matilda is indeed very much like her dad -- she has long limbs and similar features," said Bell. "However, she also possesses the beauty of her mamma -- lucky girl!"
Their granddaughter, added Ledger, "has the same walk as Heath and is such a respectful little kid -- she calls us Papa and Grandma Sal."
Williams, 32, met Ledger while filming "Brokeback Mountain" in 2004. Matilda was born October the following year while the couple was promoting the film, for which Williams garnered the first of her three Academy Award nominations and Ledger the first of his two. They broke up amicably in summer 2007. Ledger died on Jan. 22, 2008, at age 28.
