'Beasts of Southern Wild' earns Indie Spirit nods
"Beasts of Southern Wild," a film directed by Hastings-on-Hudson High graduate Benh Zeitlin, received four Indie Spirit Award nominations Tuesday.
“Beasts” was honored for Best Feature, Best Director (Zeitlin), Best Female Lead (8-year-old newcomer Quvenzhané Wallis) and Best Cinematography (Ben Richardson).
“Beasts of the Southern Wild” chronicles the fantastic adventures of a 6-year-old girl, Hushpuppy (played by Wallis), who tries to survive catastrophe and forces of nature in a secluded bayou community despite the illness of her father, Wink (Dwight Henry).

The Indie Spirit nods are just the latest honors “Beasts” has received in 2012. At Sundance, the movie won Grand Jury and cinematography honors and impressed Fox Searchlight studios enough to buy its domestic distribution rights. The film also picked up multiple prizes at Cannes, including the Camera d’Or award, bestowed upon the best first feature film.
The movie hit theaters in June, and Zeitlin even screened the film at the Jacob Burns Film Center in Pleasantville that same month. If you didn't catch it while it was in theaters, “Beasts of Southern Wild” is available for viewing on Video on Demand and will be released on DVD and Blu-ray Dec. 4.
The film’s Indie Spirit nominations are a positive indication of its Oscar prospects, since Indie Spirit nominees often earn Oscar nods as well. The Indie Spirit Awards will air Feb. 23 at 10 p.m. on IFC.
