Singer Jennifer Hudson says she has forgiven the man who killed her mother, brother and nephew in 2008, but that she still holds him responsible.

"I feel like for the most part, it's not his fault," the Grammy- and Oscar-winner told Oprah Winfrey, in excerpts from an interview airing Sunday on "Oprah's Next Chapter." "It's what he was taught, how he was brought up," Hudson said of William Balfour, her sister's estranged boyfriend, who was found guilty in May of three counts of first-degree murder.

"A lot of things came out [at trial] that we didn't even know about from his upbringing. He never had a chance," said Hudson, who turns 31 Wednesday. "Had you had the love my mother gave us, or the background that some have, then you would've stood a chance. . . . How can your heart not go out to that?"

But Hudson confirms she still holds him responsible. "Very responsible. I'm not letting him off the hook for anything."
