Singer and fashion entrepreneur Jessica Simpson gave birth in Los Angeles Tuesday to a baby girl, Maxwell Drew Johnson.

The baby, Simpson's first with fiance Eric Johnson, weighed 9 pounds, 13 ounces and was 21 3/4 inches long. Us Weekly said the infant takes her middle name from the maiden name of her maternal grandmother, Tina Drew Simpson.

"We are so grateful for all of the love, support and prayers we have received. This has been the greatest experience of our lives!" Simpson wrote on her website.

Simpson, 31, who carried large during her pregnancy, leading to unfounded speculation that she was having twins, has said she wants to lose her baby weight before marrying Johnson, a former San Francisco 49ers tight end.

The couple got engaged in November 2010. They started dating the previous May. "I want him to be my husband so bad," she said in March. But, "I do still want to wear the pretty gown, so I have to wait."

Simpson was married to singer Nick Lachey from 2002 until separating in 2005, and starred with him in the MTV reality show "Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica."

Johnson, 32, has no children with his ex-wife, stylist Keri Johnson, from whom he was separated before dating Simpson. The couple, who formally divorced on Oct. 7, 2010, had been married five years.

Simpson's sister, singer-actress Ashlee Simpson, has a 3-year-old son, Bronx Mowgli, with her ex-husband Pete Wentz, bassist for the band Fall Out Boy.
