Best-selling young-adult novelist Judy Blume, whose books include "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret" and "Superfudge," wrote on her blog Wednesday that she is recovering from a mastectomy for breast cancer.

"Now it's one month post-surgery," Blume, 74, wrote. "I'm still in NY and feeling stronger every day."

Blume said she canceled a five-week trip to Italy, "where I was hoping to finish my new book" after a June 12 visit for a routine sonogram led to her having a biopsy. She learned days later she had ductal carcinoma, and had a breast removed and reconstructed on July 30.

It was her second cancer surgery, she wrote. "I'd had a hysterectomy seventeen years ago (cervical cancer caused by HPV)."

She noted that her cancer hadn't been detected by a mammogram or regular physical exam because she has dense breast tissue.
