Singers Katy Perry and John Mayer reportedly have broken up after an 18-month on-and-off relationship.
E! News said Wednesday that Perry, 29, initiated the split within the past few days. On Friday she had returned home to Los Angeles after having been to London and Milan without Mayer, 36, E! said. Engagement rumors had briefly sparked last week after Perry wore a diamond ring on her left ring finger at the Elle Style Awards in London, but she was not seen with it afterward.
A spokeswoman for Perry told Newsday, "As always, we don't comment on Katy's personal life." Mayer's representative could not be reached.
The couple has weathered breakup reports at least twice before since first being photographed together in August 2012, after having been seen on occasional dates since that June. Reports also surfaced in August that the two were no longer together, but they then were seen behaving romantically at the FYF Fest in Los Angeles on Sept. 1 and were out and about in New York City the following month, including on Mayer's 35th birthday.
They appeared to have broken up a second time in March 2013, but were back together by June and were seen together as late as Jan. 26, at a Grammy Awards after-party.
Mayer has had sometimes tempestuous relationships with Jennifer Aniston, Jessica Simpson and Taylor Swift, who recorded the caustic song "Dear John" about him after their breakup.
Perry married comedian Russell Brand in October 2010, but he filed for divorce in December 2011.
