Singer La Toya Jackson has become engaged to her longtime business partner, Jeffré Phillips.
People magazine said Wednesday that Phillips had proposed in August while the couple was vacationing in Hawaii. Jackson -- one of the clan of singers that included her late younger brother, Michael -- told the magazine she has been caught off-guard and so, "it wasn't a fast yes."
Jackson, 58, described following a path of white rose petals and gardenias to a hotel balcony. There, she told People, the 46-year-old Phillips had arranged a dinner of her favorite foods, including chicken soup, and surprised her with a 17.5-carat diamond ring.
Jackson was previously in a controversial marriage with her former manager Jack Gordon, whom she divorced in 1997 after years of claimed physical and mental abuse at his hands. Gordon died in 2005.
The second season of Jackson's OWN reality show, "Life with La Toya," premieres Saturday.
