The latest edition of "VH1 Divas Live" felt more like "Divas: The Next Generation," with a cast of big-voiced singers in their teens and 20s.
But that didn't make the show - a benefit for the VH1 Save The Music Foundation - any less entertaining. "Divas Live," returning after a four-year hiatus, reflected the power of "American Idol," with half the stars coming from that show - Kelly Clarkson, Jordin Sparks and Jennifer Hudson - as well as host Paula Abdul, making one of her first appearances since leaving the TV juggernaut.
Abdul was in fine form, performing a medley of hits at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and joking around, even impersonating her "Idol" replacement Ellen DeGeneres, before adding, "Nothing but love, Ellen."
Clarkson's lovely take on "Already Gone" and Hudson's booming version of "Spotlight" proved they were both worthy of the "Divas" stage.
Although she was the weakest of the divas vocally, Miley Cyrus held her own with a fun version of "Party in the U.S.A." Leona Lewis found herself schooled a bit in her duet with Cyndi Lauper on "True Colors."
The other divas fared better in their duets, especially Adele and india.arie on "Video" and Sparks keeping up with Martina McBride.
But it was Hudson's soaring duet with Stevie Wonder on "All in Love Is Fair" that showed the evening's true magic.
