British actor Orlando Bloom has spoken publicly for the first time about his recent breakup with Victoria's Secret model Miranda Kerr, his wife of three years and the mother of their 2-year-old son, Flynn.

"You know, that's a very hard question to answer," Bloom told CBS News correspondent Rita Braver when she asked him why the couple had separated, "and really it's one that time will tell."

Speaking for a segment of "CBS Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood" airing this weekend, he added, "But when you have two people who are incredibly busy and who are both very visible in the world I think it can be challenging to keep that schedule and that kind of life in the same track, you know."

He said the split has been "very challenging . . . I love Miranda and she loves me. We both adore and love our son. We both recognize and realize that we're going to be in each other's lives for the rest of our lives, raising our son."

Bloom, 36, currently starring in Broadway's "Romeo and Juliet," began dating the Australian Kerr, 30, in 2007. "We were friends for a while and then it just developed into a little more," Kerr told Hello! magazine the following year. She and Bloom made their first public appearance together in April 2008 at the Doncaster Handicap, a major Australia horse race in the suburbs of her native Sydney, and announced their engagement in June 2010.

The two married without advance notice the following month, and had their son in January 2011.
