Actress and reality-TV star Shannen Doherty helped a fan threatening suicide in New Jersey on Sunday, averting a possible tragedy. reported Tuesday that the former "Charmed" and "Beverly Hills, 90210" star had been receiving disturbing tweets -- all since removed from her Twitter page -- from a troubled woman threatening to kill herself unless Doherty phoned her.

The actress, who had reason to believe the woman had a gun, persuaded the fan to reveal her address.

From her home in Los Angeles, Doherty then contacted the Westampton Township Police Department, in Burlington County, which immediately sent officers to the unnamed woman's home.

There police met with family members, TMZ said, who directed them to a 27-year-old woman in her bedroom. She told the responders she did not wish to do herself harm, and police found nothing that suggested she was an immediate danger to herself. The woman declined medical attention and police left her in the care of her family, the site said.

Doherty on Sunday tweeted, "Thank you to the Westampton Police Department for being diligent and so reassuring."
