Betsey Johnson Fall 2014: Street Sirens

Inspiration:  Hotness and yeah more hotness.  Yep, Johnson’s invitation featured a red hot water bottle with a message that blared, “It’s cold outside.  Betsey’s hot.”  Likewise, her runway program, edged in flame graphics, showed a red burner on a stove and touted the message once again:  “Betsey’s Hot.”  Her concept?  Rihanna meets "American Hustle," and Johnson...

Clover Canyon Fall 2014: Celtic enchantment

Robes are an intriguing alternative to a jacket

The inspiration: In a word—Ireland.  Clover Canyon's program notes featured a poem by William Butler Yeats (“Faeries, come take me out of this dull world / For I would ride with you upon the wind…”) and praised the greenest of greens, the country spires and the stouthearted spirit of the Irish. No wonder the line is called Celtic Enchantment.

The vibe:  Electric. This...

Marc Jacobs' sharknado fashion apocalypse

At his spring 2014 show at the Lexington

The Marc Jacobs runway show -- the finale of New York Fashion Week -- was as climatic as it was climactic. Climatic, as in pouring rain outside the New York State Armory, where Jacobs holds his show, and sweltering inside. Jacobs can’t control the rain (we don’t THINK) but we weren’t sure if the heat inside was a technical fluke or part of the ambience, given that he’d transformed the space into...

Betsey Johnson's Rx for pretty

Talk about a tough year -- make that year and a half -- for Betsey Johnson, the queen of outrageous fashion (and fashion shows): Her fashion label went bankrupt last year, but she made a comeback this year, releasing a lower-priced line of dresses and accessories. She also starred with her daughter, Lulu, in a reality show on the Style Network. Now, two days before her latest fashion show, it was...

Anna Sui romances the runway

(Credit: Getty Images)

Anna Sui’s unique brand of chock-a-block patterns and offbeat inspiration are what keep her fans happy, and they should be pretty pleased with this spring collection, which had a distinctly haute hippie vibe: crocheted caftans, fringe, floral chiffon. We later heard she had the pre-Raphaelites on the brain, romantic artists of the 19th century who loved color and detail almost as much, it would...

J. Mendel's new look for the red carpet

(Credit: Getty Images)

It isn’t often that a major fashion label for the uber-wealthy (and really uber) attempts a major change-up -- you don’t want to throw off the Upper East Side set -- but J. Mendel designer Gilles Mendel decided to rock his fashion boat a bit. His collection is full of luxe separates: fur vests, tulle skirts, crepe tees.

No gowns. Well, OK, no need to get the defibrillator. There were a few,...

Vera Wang scores points

Vera Wang’s signature -- the way her dresses seem to defy gravity, floating down the runway -- was on full display at her spring show on Tuesday. But she’s not all lighter-than-air softness, as is clear from the sporty vibe that played a major part in this collection -- for the customer who relies less on angel wings and more on that Type-A competitive edge.

Two very different themes, held...

Narciso Rodriguez -- diagonally speaking

It’s the little things that grab your attention at a Narciso Rodriguez show. A diagonal seam. A sliver of skin. The lack of a lapel.

Each had their place in his spring collection, which he showed Tuesday night at an event space in Manhattan’s far West Side. The seaming popped up on sleek crepe dresses, where a few vertical seams were offset by one headed diagonally. Sometimes, the seam extended...

French designer Sophie Theallet embraces color, prints and sensuality --  if you’ve seen her collections before, you know that going in. And this season she didn’t disappoint.

A red Henley top with red-print skirt, a peach and turquoise pleated number, and a mint green and brown print dress (hard to say what the print was exactly -- an abstract, leafy pattern, it seemed, while in motion...

Marc by Marc Jacobs' satin dolls and current events

The Marc by Marc Jacobs spring 2014 collection

Marc Jacobs has free speech on the brain -- and in the DJ booth -- which explains his choice of music at his Marc by Marc Jacobs show on Tuesday at Pier 57, along the Hudson River. His models marched to the strains of “WWPRD,” (short for “What Would Pussy Riot Do?”), a just-released anthem from Jeffrey Lewis, who recites the lyrics, “What is this -- the Middle Ages? Let those women out of those...
