In rare comments about his personal life, Tom Cruise admits that the separation and divorce initiated by ex-wife Katie Holmes took him by surprise.
"I did not expect that," Cruise, 50, told the German TV channel ProSieben about the breakup. Speaking at the Vienna premiere of his film "Oblivion," he told U.S.-born Steven Gätjen of the "Steven Loves Cinema" program that the events gave him much "time to reflect."
"Life is a challenge," he said. "To be 50 and have experiences and think you have everything under control, and then it hits you -- that's what life is. Life is tragicomic. You need a sense of humor."
Cruise -- whose comments were reported by the German magazine Bunte from a ProSieben online video unavailable in the United States for copyright reasons -- said his children "Suri, Connor and Isabella have grown up on film sets. The door is always open for them" to be part of the industry.
As for himself, he said he tries to stay grounded. "I don't have an insular life," he said. "I want to be in contact with people."
