FARM STANDS
Whether you're in the market for peaches or pumpkins, turnips or tomatoes, buying directly from the farmer ensures the freshest produce and affords the opportunity to learn from someone who knows exactly how it was grown and interesting ways to prepare it.
Long Island has scores of working farms. Most of them are east of Riverhead, but western Suffolk is home to more than a dozen; and Nassau County has four. The entire Island is well served by 16 weekly farmers' markets.
Running a farm stand is not an exact science. Although many stands list hours and days of operation, it's best to call ahead, especially if the weather is bad. And keep in mind that a farm's inventory is limited by what is ripe that day; early birds catch the best produce.

FARMERS' MARKETS
A more convenient, if less picturesque, alternative to shopping at a bona fide farm stand is to avail yourself of one of the many farmers' markets on Long Island. These once-a-week markets, usually located in a town parking lot, offer farm-fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables, as well as plants, preserves, baked goods and other foodstuffs. Except where indicated, these markets are sponsored by the Long Island Growers Market, 631-323-3653.
