Movie buzz: Tia Carrere and Jennifer Connelly
WHO: Tia Carrere
THE MOVIE: “Wave Dancer”
THE DEAL: The 42-year-old Honolulu-born actress, whose roles in Mike Myers’ “Wayne’s World” comedies made her the Megan Fox of the 1990s, will star in this biopic about Rell Sunn, the Hawaiian surfer, diver, karate black-belt and hula dancer, according to The Hollywood Reporter. What’s more, Carrere co-wrote the screenplay and will co-produce. Martha Coolidge (“Valley Girl,” “Real Genius”) is set to direct.
WHO: Jennifer Connelly
THE MOVIE: “What’s Wrong with Virginia”
THE DEAL: The actress will star alongside Ed Harris (“Appaloosa”), Emma Roberts (“Lymelife”) and Amy Madigan (ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy”) in this drama written and directed by Dustin Lance Black, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of “Milk,” Variety reports. The tangled story concerns a sherrif whose bid for the state senate is jeopardized by two affairs — one his own, the other his daughter’s. Filming is set to begin late this month in Holland, Mich.
THE MOVIE: “Afghan Star”
THE DEAL: This recently-released documentary goes behind the scenes of Afghanistan’s version of “American Idol,” in which singing and dancing in the post-Taliban era can take on political overtones, especially for women. A screening next week, organized by the Greater Port Jefferson-Northern Brookhaven Arts Council, will feature guest speaker Naheed Bahram from the advocacy group Women for Afghan Women.
INFO: Monday at 7 p.m. at the Charles B. Wang Center, Stony Brook University. Tickets are $5. 631-473-5220; gpjac.org.
