THE DEAL The Oscar-nominated actress who played a young lesbian in “Carol” is in talks for the lead role in a biopic of Mary Magdalene, the devoted follower of Jesus Christ, according to Deadline.com. The director, Garth Davis, praised Mara as “a once-in-a-lifetime talent” after working with her on his film “Lion,” scheduled for release later this year. Mara is also starring in an upcoming untitled film by Terrence Malick.

WHO David Bowie

THE DEAL The rock star, who died last month, will be honored at the upcoming Berlin Film Festival, Variety reports. The event, which takes place in a city where Bowie produced some of his greatest albums during the 1970s, will feature a screening of his surreal 1976 sci-fi film “The Man Who Fell to Earth” at Friedrichstadt-Palast on Feb. 12. In tribute to another recently deceased actor, Alan Rickman, the festival will screen Ang Lee’s “Sense and Sensibility,” which won the Golden Bear Award there in 1996.

THE DEAL The Oscar-nominated director of “Mad Max: Fury Road” has been named president of the jury at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, according to TheWrap.com. The appointment continues a strong year for Miller, whose “Fury Road” became a major hit last summer, wowed critics and is now up for 10 Oscars. “What an unmitigated delight!” Miller, 70, said in a festival news release. “Such an honor. I’ll be there with bells on.”
